Learning Is Fun! Be Here On Day One!
The 2010-11 school year will commence on August 9th. It’s important that children are in school, because learning begins on the very first day of instruction. Scottsdale Unified teachers come to class each day prepared to teach all students, and these lessons are learned best when children are in class! Remember 08-09-10 – Learning Is Fun! Be Here On Day One!Artwork by Jacob Tobey, Arcadia High School student, and slogan by Max Campodall'Orto, Kiva Elementary School student.

Copper Ridge School and Chances for Children - Hope for Haiti
Copper Ridge School is proud to announce that we are working in partnership with Chances for Children and Coalition of Children in Need Association (COCINA) on a second relief drive for the children of Haitian Earthquake victims. We have the opportunity to help 400 students who lost their homes in Port au Prince. These young Haitian families relocated to the town of Ouanaminthe (pronounced wan-a-minth) in the northern part of Haiti where their children can receive a quality education at cost.
Our assistance will be in the form of school supplies/gear or donations to provide lunch, textbooks, or tuition. School supplies (new or gently used) are needed and appreciated, so don’t throw away your pencil bag if it is in good shape. A list of needed items is below. A collection bin labeled Chances for Children will be in the main office.
Kids Helping Kids continues to be an important part of our work with Chances for Children. This means that we want kids to help in collecting the money and supplies. The idea is that kids should experience the importance of charitable giving and see their contributions make a lasting impact. Copper Ridge can look forward to a long term exchange with this school in Ouanaminthe.
Suggested In Kind Donations:
• Pencil Bags – filled with #2 pencils, black ball point pens, eraser, ruler, pencil sharpener, colored pencils
• Spiral Notebooks
Other optional In Kind Donation Items:
• Backpacks – gently used
• Reams of letter and legal size duplication paper
• Flip chart paper, white
• Crêpe paper
• Poster board, all colors

• Cardboard (for art projects)
• Manila drawing paper
• Colored pencils (boxes of 12 or 16)
• White glue (8 oz.) (not glue sticks)
• Ebony drawing pencils

Haiti Earthquake Relief
Copper Ridge School is proud to announce that we are working in partnership with Chances for Children on a second relief benefit for Haitian Earthquake Relief. Chances for Children supports two orphanages and a school in Haiti. These facilities were critically affected by the earthquake. Copper Ridge students and PTO worked with Chances for Children to design a relief project that collects needed supplies and funds the cost of shipping those supplies. An important part of this project is the idea of “Kids Helping Kids.”
Beginning February 8, 2010, our school will begin collecting coin/cash contributions toward the shipping costs of a second container of relief aid specifically for Chances for Children. Because we are emphasizing “Kids Helping Kids” your child may ask (or be asked) to do chores to earn money to contribute to this cause. Our goal is to reach $9,000.00 which is approximately the cost of shipping a container to Haiti. We realize that with the “Kids Helping Kids” emphasis this may be a challenge. We appreciate parent support in helping students to participate in achieving our goal. By collecting money and supplies our students have the chance to experience the importance of charitable giving and see their contributions make a lasting impact. Parents are also welcome to donate. Homeroom teachers may have established a classroom collection box, or there is a large collection box in the main office. We were excited to learn that the Lynn and Foster Freiss foundation has agreed to match our Copper Ridge collection dollar for dollar! Later in February we will share a list of needed items to fill the container. This list will be different than the first drive because the needs are longer term.
During our first drive in January the Copper Ridge Community quickly collected an impressive amount of supplies that we were able to include in a shipment that arrived at an established orphanage in Haiti just six days later. This week on morning announcements we were able to see pictures of our donations traveling from port to port, arriving in Haiti on January 28. This endeavor is a powerful experience for “Kids Helping Kids” and it is a remarkable statement about the caring of our community. Our school looks forward to a long-term exchange with the Chances for Children school and orphanages. We thank you for your previous generosity and your continued support of our students as they reach out to children in need.
